In terms of climate, Orlando falls under the humid subtropical category, similar to many regions in the Southern United States. It experiences two distinct seasons: a hot and rainy season from May to late October, coinciding with the Atlantic hurricane season, and a warm and dry season from November to April. The city’s warm and humid climate is influenced by its low elevation, proximity to the Tropic of Cancer, and its location at the center of a peninsula. The Gulf Stream’s presence also shapes Orlando’s climate, affecting its temperature and precipitation patterns.

During the peak of Orlando’s humid summer season, high temperatures typically range from the low 90s °F (32–34 °C), with low temperatures rarely dropping below the low 70s °F (22–24 °C). The period from April 9 to October 14 marks the average duration of 90 °F (32 °C) temperatures. While the humidity helps prevent temperatures from surpassing 100 °F (38 °C), it contributes to a heat index that can exceed 110 °F (43 °C). The highest recorded temperature in the city occurred on September 8, 1921, reaching 103 °F (39 °C). Thunderstorms are frequent during this season, resulting from the convergence of air masses from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, often accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, powerful winds, and occasional hail.

Winter in Orlando brings lower humidity levels and more moderate temperatures, which can vary more significantly. January’s average daily temperature stands at 60.6 °F (15.9 °C). Freezing temperatures occur on average only 1.6 nights per year, with the lowest recorded temperature being 18 °F (−8 °C) on December 28, 1894. Orlando falls within hardiness zone 10a, with an annual mean minimum temperature slightly above 30 °F (−1 °C). Due to the dry winter season, snow is exceedingly rare, with the only recorded accumulation within the city limits dating back to 1948. Flurries have been observed on a few occasions, including 1989, 2006, and 2010.

Annually, the Orange County Convention Center hosts the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), the largest modeling and simulation conference worldwide. The city’s proximity to Patrick Space Force Base, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and Kennedy Space Center allows residents to commute to work from Orlando’s suburbs. Port Canaveral, a prominent cruise ship terminal, is also easily accessible from Orlando.

Orlando’s primary airport is the Orlando International Airport (MCO), the busiest airport in Florida. Serving as a hub and focus city for Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and Southwest Airlines, it acts as a major international gateway for the mid-Florida region. Several major foreign carriers operate at the airport, including Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aer Lingus, Aeroméxico, Air Canada, British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Latam, and Virgin Atlantic.

The Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) in the nearby suburb of Sanford serves as a secondary airport for the region and a focus city for Allegiant Air. Additionally, the Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) near Downtown Orlando caters primarily to executive jets, flight training schools, and general small-aircraft aviation.
