Winters in Calgary are cold and dry, with temperatures dropping below -20 °C (-4 °F) on an average of 22 days per year and below -30 °C (-22 °F) on an average of 3.7 days per year. However, warm, dry chinook winds frequently blow into Alberta from the mountains, causing rapid temperature increases. These winds can raise winter temperatures by up to 20 °C (36 °F) and even 30 °C (54 °F) within a few hours, sometimes lasting for several days. Calgary’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains also influences winter temperatures, resulting in milder conditions compared to other cities in the Prairie Provinces. The wind chill factor, combined with an average wind speed of 14.2 km/h (8.8 mph), one of the highest among Canadian cities, further affects temperature perception.

During summer, daytime temperatures range from 10 to 25 °C (50 to 77 °F), with an average of 5.1 days exceeding 30 °C (86 °F) in June, July, and August. Occasionally, these hot days extend into September or commence in May. In winter, temperatures can drop below or reach -30 °C (-22 °F) for an average of 3.7 days per year. Thanks to Calgary’s high elevation and aridity, summer days are typically comfortable and non-humid, setting it apart from many other major Canadian cities. Summer evenings also cool off, with monthly average low temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F) throughout the summer months.

Calgary has established itself as a prominent player in Canada’s oil and gas industry, and its economy has experienced significant growth compared to the overall Canadian economy (43% and 25% respectively) between 1999 and 2009. The city benefits from high personal and family incomes, low unemployment rates, and a high GDP per capita, all of which have been bolstered by increased sales and prices resulting from a resource boom and economic diversification.

As part of the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor, one of the country’s fastest-growing regions, Calgary enjoys a robust job market in Alberta.
