Houston excels in the healthcare field and houses the second-highest number of Fortune 500 headquarters within its city limits, second only to New York City. The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in terms of international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled.

Houston’s climate falls under the humid subtropical category, which is typical of the Southern United States. Although not situated in Tornado Alley like Northern Texas, the area occasionally experiences tornadoes due to spring supercell thunderstorms. Houston has gained global recognition for its energy industry, particularly in oil and natural gas, as well as for biomedical research and aeronautics. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar power are also emerging as economic pillars in the city, with the City Government purchasing 90% of its annual 1 TWh power from wind and solar sources. Houston has also emerged as a hub for technology startup firms. Prominent technology and software companies within the Greater Houston area include Crown Castle, KBR, Cybersoft, Houston Wire & Cable, and HostGator. On April 4, 2022, Hewlett Packard Enterprise relocated its global headquarters from California to the Greater Houston area. Additionally, the Houston Ship Channel plays a significant role in the city’s economic foundation.

Due to these strengths, Houston is designated as a global city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network, as well as by global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney. The Houston area stands as the leading U.S. market for exports, surpassing New York City in 2013, as per data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. In 2012, the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land area recorded $110.3 billion in merchandise exports. Petroleum products, chemicals, and oil and gas extraction equipment constituted around two-thirds of the metropolitan area’s exports that year. Mexico, Canada, and Brazil emerged as the top three destinations for Houston’s exports.

Furthermore, the Houston area serves as a prominent center for the production of oilfield equipment. The city’s success as a petrochemical complex can be attributed, in large part, to its busy ship channel, the Port of Houston. Within the United States, the port ranks first in international commerce and 16th among the world’s largest ports. In contrast to most regions, high oil and gasoline prices benefit Houston’s economy due to the significant number of residents employed in the energy industry.
