In 2016, the gross domestic product of the St. Louis metro area reached $160 billion, surpassing the previous year’s figure of $155 billion. The gross metropolitan product of Greater St. Louis amounted to $146 billion in 2014, ranking as the 21st highest in the country. Per-capita GDP in the St. Louis metropolitan area was $48,738 in 2014, marking a 1.6% increase from the previous year. In terms of business sectors, manufacturing accounted for nearly $11 billion in 2007, followed by health care and social services with $3.5 billion, professional or technical services with $3.1 billion, and retail trade with $2.5 billion. The health care sector employed the most workers in the area, with 34,000 jobs, followed by administrative and support jobs (24,000), manufacturing (21,000), and food service (20,000).
As of 2022, the St. Louis Metropolitan Area is home to seven Fortune 500 companies. They include Centene, Emerson Electric, Reinsurance Group of America, Edward Jones, Olin, Graybar Electric, and Ameren.

General Motors manufactures automobiles in Wentzville, and a previous plant, known as the St. Louis Truck Assembly, produced GMC automobiles from 1920 until 1987. Chrysler closed its St. Louis Assembly production facility in nearby Fenton, Missouri, while Ford shuttered the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood.
