Hawaii, located in the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from the U.S. mainland, is a state in the Western United States. It stands as the only U.S. state outside of North America and is unique for being an archipelago and the only state in the tropics. Hawaii encompasses the entire Hawaiian archipelago, consisting of 137 volcanic islands spanning 1,500 miles (2,400 km). These islands are part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania, both geographically and culturally. With approximately 750 miles (1,210 km) of coastline, Hawaii boasts the fourth-longest ocean coastline among U.S. states.
The main islands of Hawaii, from northwest to southeast, are Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi, often referred to as the “Big Island.” The state is named after the island of Hawaiʻi to avoid confusion. Additionally, the uninhabited Northwestern Hawaiian Islands make up the majority of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, the largest protected area in the United States and the fourth-largest in the world.
In terms of land area, Hawaii is the eighth-smallest state among the 50 U.S. states, and it ranks as the 11th-least populous. However, with a population of 1.4 million residents, it has a relatively high population density, ranking 13th in the country. The majority of the population resides on O’ahu, which is home to the state capital and largest city, Honolulu. Hawaii is known for its diverse population, shaped by its central location in the Pacific and a long history of migration. As one of the six majority-minority states in the U.S., it has the largest proportion of Asian Americans, the largest Buddhist community, and a significant multiracial population. This cultural mix, along with the indigenous Hawaiian heritage, creates a unique blend of North American and East Asian influences. As of 2020, Hawaii has the highest life expectancy of any U.S. state, at 80.7 years.
Hawaii has a tropical climate characterized by relatively mild temperatures and humidity due to constant trade winds from the east. Summer temperatures reach around 88 °F (31 °C) during the day, with nighttime lows of 75 °F (24 °C). In winter, temperatures typically range around 83 °F (28 °C) during the day and seldom drop below 65 °F (18 °C) at night, especially at low elevations. While it may be surprising, snow occasionally falls at high elevations, such as on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, reaching 13,800 feet (4,200 m) in some winter months. The island of Haleakalā rarely sees snow. Kauaʻi’s Mount Waiʻaleʻale holds the second-highest average annual rainfall on Earth, receiving approximately 460 inches (12,000 mm) per year. Hawaii generally experiences two seasons: a dry season from May to October and a wet season from October to April.
Hawaii’s economic history can be traced through various dominant industries, including sandalwood, whaling, sugarcane, pineapple, the military, tourism, and education. By the 1840s, sugarcane plantations became a significant part of Hawaii’s economy due to high demand from the United States and efficient transportation via steamships. The sugar industry was largely controlled by American missionary families and businessmen known as the “Big Five,” who monopolized its profits. As Hawaii’s annexation was being considered in 1898, sugarcane producers shifted their focus to cultivating tropical fruits like pineapple, which became the primary export of Hawaii’s plantation economy. Since achieving statehood in 1959, tourism has become the largest industry, contributing 24.3% of the state’s gross state product (GSP) in 1997, despite efforts to diversify the economy. In 2003, Hawaii’s gross output reached US$47 billion, and the per capita income for residents was US$54,516 in 2014. Exports from Hawaii include food items like coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapple, livestock, sugarcane, and honey.
Interestingly, honey bees are considered one of Hawaii’s most valuable exports in terms of weight. According to the Hawaii Agricultural Statistics Service, agricultural sales in Hawaii amounted to US$370.9 million from diversified agriculture, US$100.6 million from pineapple, and US$64.3 million from sugarcane. The state’s consistent climate has attracted the seed industry, which can test three generations of crops per year on the islands compared to one or two on the mainland. In 2012, seed production generated US$264 million in revenue, supporting a workforce of 1,400 individuals.
