The city experiences approximately 111 days each year with temperatures reaching at least 100 °F (38 °C), primarily from late May to late September. Furthermore, temperatures exceeding 110 °F (43 °C) occur an average of 21 days annually. On June 26, 1990, Phoenix reached an all-time recorded high temperature of 122 °F (50 °C).

As of 2017, the Phoenix metropolitan statistical area (MSA) boasted a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of nearly $243 billion. The region’s top five industries were real estate ($41.96 billion), finance and insurance ($19.71 billion), manufacturing ($19.91 billion), retail trade ($18.64 billion), and healthcare ($19.78 billion). If government were considered a private industry, it would have ranked second on the list, generating $23.37 billion. Phoenix provides favorable conditions for real estate developers, as they encounter minimal constraints when planning and executing new projects.

In January 2016, government employees accounted for 10.5% of the workforce, reflecting the city’s status as both the county seat and state capital. The civilian labor force comprised 2,200,900 individuals, and the unemployment rate stood at 4.6%. Phoenix houses four Fortune 500 companies: Avnet (an electronics corporation), Freeport-McMoRan (a mining company), PetSmart (a retailer), and Republic Services (a waste hauler). Honeywell’s Aerospace division holds its headquarters in Phoenix, with many of their avionics and mechanical facilities located in the valley. Intel operates one of its largest sites in the area, employing approximately 12,000 individuals and ranking as the second largest Intel location nationwide. The city also serves as the headquarters for U-HAUL International, Best Western, and Apollo Group, the parent company of the University of Phoenix. Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport is primarily serviced by Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier. Mesa Air Group, a regional airline group, has its headquarters in Phoenix. The military maintains a substantial presence in the city, with Luke Air Force Base located in the western suburbs. Phoenix endured significant repercussions from the subprime mortgage crash, yet it has managed to recover 83% of the jobs lost during the recession.
