Halifax experiences a humid continental climate with oceanic influences, resulting in warm summers and relatively mild winters due to Gulf Stream moderation. The winter and summer temperatures are usually milder compared to inland areas at similar latitudes, ranging between approximately -8 and 28 °C (18 and 82 °F), with occasional exceptions. January is the coldest month, while August is the warmest. The sea has a significant impact on the climate, causing a seasonal lag in summer, with August being notably warmer than June. The January temperature is only 1.1 °C (2.0 °F) colder than the isotherm for an oceanic climate.

Precipitation is abundant throughout the year, with winter characterized by a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow, often accompanied by freeze-thaw cycles. While snowfall is heavy in winter, snow cover tends to be patchy due to frequent melt cycles. Some winters exhibit colder temperatures and fewer freeze-thaw cycles, such as the notably cold and snowy winter of 2014-2015. Spring is typically wet and cool, arriving later than in similar latitudes due to cooler sea temperatures. Summers are mild and pleasant, with infrequent hot and humid conditions. Warm and pleasant weather often extends well into September, and occasionally mid-October. November to February sees the highest monthly precipitation due to intense late-fall to winter storms originating from the Northeastern U.S., while August is the warmest and driest month on average. Halifax occasionally experiences hurricanes, mainly between August and October, with notable examples including Hurricane Juan in 2003 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

Halifax is home to various major employers and economic generators, including the Department of National Defence, the Port of Halifax, Irving Shipbuilding, the Nova Scotia Health Authority, IMP Group, Bell Aliant, Emera, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, government entities, banks, and universities. The municipality has witnessed a real estate boom, leading to numerous property developments and the gentrification of former working-class areas.

In the rural areas of the municipality, resource industries play a significant role. Agriculture, fishing harbors, mining, forestry, and natural gas extraction contribute to the local economy. The Musquodoboit Valley is Halifax’s primary agricultural district, with 150 farms, 110 of which are family-owned. Fishing harbors are located along the coastal areas, with some managed independently and others falling under federal management by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The municipality also engages in natural gas extraction off the coast of Sable Island, as well as the extraction of clay, gold, gypsum, limestone, and shale in rural mainland areas. Limestone is extracted in the Musquodoboit Valley, while gold extraction takes place in Moose River.
