The Dallas metropolitan area accounts for one-fourth of the population of Texas, making it the largest in both the Southern United States and Texas, surpassed only by the Greater Houston metropolitan area. According to the 2020 United States census, the city of Dallas recorded a population of 1,304,379, marking an increase of 106,563 since the 2010 census.

Historically, Dallas had a predominantly white population, with non-Hispanic whites comprising 82.8% of the population in 1930. However, over the 20th century, the city’s population experienced diversification due to immigration and white flight. Consequently, the proportion of non-Hispanic white residents declined to less than one-third of the city’s total population. The 2010 U.S. census revealed that 50.7% of the population was white (28.8% non-Hispanic white), 24.8% was Black or African American, 0.7% was American Indian and Alaska Native, 2.9% was Asian, and 2.6% belonged to two or more races. Furthermore, 42.4% of the total population had Hispanic or Latino American origins, irrespective of race.

By the early 1900s, Dallas emerged as an economic powerhouse, radiating its influence across the Southern United States. In 1914, it was designated as the seat of the Eleventh Federal Reserve District. By 1925, Texas produced over one-third of the nation’s cotton crop, with 31% of the state’s cotton originating from within a 100-mile (160 km) radius of Dallas. In the 1930s, significant petroleum reserves were discovered near Kilgore, east of Dallas. The city’s proximity to these oil discoveries positioned it as a central player in the nation’s petroleum market. Subsequent petroleum findings in the Permian Basin, the Panhandle, the Gulf Coast, and Oklahoma solidified Dallas’s status as a pivotal hub for the industry.

The Dallas–Fort Worth area houses a substantial concentration of corporate headquarters for publicly traded companies in the United States. In Fortune Magazine’s 2022 annual list of the Fortune 500, Dallas boasted 11 Fortune 500 companies, while the broader DFW region claimed a total of 23. As of 2022, Dallas–Fort Worth represents the second-largest cluster of Fortune 500 headquarters in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, following the metropolitan areas of Houston, Chicago, and New York.

Notably, it is home to Highland Park Village, the second shopping center ever constructed in the United States, which opened its doors in 1931. The city also hosts two other major malls in North Texas: the Dallas Galleria and NorthPark Center, the latter being the second-largest mall in Texas. Both malls boast high-end stores and attract a significant number of tourists to the region.

Additionally, Dallas ranks as the third most popular destination for business travel within the United States. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, spanning over 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2), stands as one of the largest and busiest convention centers in the country.
