Washington, D.C., officially known as the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington or D.C., serves as the capital city and federal district of the United States. As of 2020, the Washington metropolitan area, including Washington, D.C., and parts of Northern Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia, boasted the fourth-largest metropolitan economy in the United States, as measured by gross metropolitan product (GMP). Its economy is diversifying, with a growing percentage of jobs in professional and business services, alongside more traditional sectors like tourism, entertainment, and government.
Between 2009 and 2016, Washington, D.C. consistently ranked at the top in terms of gross domestic product per capita among U.S. states. In 2016, its GDP per capita stood at $160,472, nearly three times higher than that of the second-ranked state, Massachusetts. As of 2022, the metropolitan statistical area reported an unemployment rate of 3.1%, placing it 171st among the 389 metropolitan areas defined by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Meanwhile, the District of Columbia itself had an unemployment rate of 4.6% during the same period. In 2019, Washington, D.C. recorded the highest median household income in the U.S., amounting to $92,266.
As of July 2022, approximately 25% of the employed population in Washington, D.C. worked for the federal government.
