Fort Worth, situated in the state of Texas, is the fifth-largest city in the state and the 13th-largest city in the entire United States. It serves as the county seat of Tarrant County, spanning approximately 350 square miles (910 km2) across four additional counties: Denton, Johnson, Parker, and Wise. As per the 2022 United States census estimate, Fort Worth’s population was recorded at 958,692. The city holds the distinction of being the second-largest in the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, which ranks as the fourth-most populous metropolitan area in the country.
Fort Worth boasts several university communities, including Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, University of North Texas Health Science Center, and Texas A&M University School of Law. The city is also home to numerous multinational corporations, with headquarters of prominent companies such as Bell Textron, American Airlines, BNSF Railway, and Chip 1 Exchange located in Fort Worth.
As a crossroads city situated at the convergence of the North, South, East, and West, Cincinnati experienced less influence from European immigrants compared to East Coast cities of the same era. However, it did receive a significant number of German-speaking immigrants who played a vital role in establishing the city’s cultural institutions. By the end of the 19th century, as freight shipping shifted from steamboats to railroads, Cincinnati’s growth slowed considerably. Other inland cities, particularly Chicago and St. Louis, surpassed Cincinnati in population as they capitalized on strong commodity exploitation, economic development, and the expansion of railroads. St. Louis served as the gateway to westward migration for several decades after the Civil War.
In terms of climate classification, Fort Worth falls under the humid subtropical climate category. It lies within USDA hardiness zone 8a. The region experiences hot and humid summers, along with mild to cool winters. August is the hottest month, with an average high temperature of 96 °F (35.6 °C) and an average overnight low of 75 °F (23.9 °C), resulting in an average temperature of 85 °F (29.4 °C). On the other hand, January is the coldest month, with an average high temperature of 56 °F (13.3 °C) and average low temperatures of 35 °F (1.7 °C). The average temperature in January is 46 °F (8 °C). Fort Worth has experienced extreme temperatures, with the highest recorded temperature being 113 °F (45.0 °C) on June 26 and 27, 1980, during the Great 1980 Heat Wave. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the city was −8 °F (−22.2 °C) on February 12, 1899. Given its location in North Texas, Fort Worth is susceptible to severe thunderstorms known as supercells, which can generate large hail and tornadoes.
Fort Worth holds the distinction of being the most populous city in Tarrant County and the second-most populous community in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The metropolitan area encompasses one-quarter of Texas’ population, making it the largest in the Southern U.S. and Texas, following the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. According to the American Community Survey’s 2018 estimates, Fort Worth had a population close to 900,000 residents, which grew to an estimated 909,585 by 2019. As per the 2020 United States census, Fort Worth’s population stood at 918,915.
During its early years, Fort Worth relied on cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail. This trade route facilitated the transportation of millions of cattle northward, with Fort Worth emerging as a prominent center for cattle drives and ranching until the Civil War. The city faced hardships during the war, which led to a decline in its population. However, it witnessed a recovery during the Reconstruction Era, characterized by the establishment of general stores, banks, and the notorious “Hell’s Half-Acre” – a district featuring numerous saloons and dance halls that fueled both business and criminal activities. In the early 20th century, the military implemented martial law to regulate bartenders and prostitutes in Hell’s Half-Acre.
Since the late 20th century, Fort Worth has become the headquarters for several major companies. This includes American Airlines Group and its subsidiaries American Airlines and Envoy Air, John Peter Smith Hospital, Pier 1 Imports, Chip 1 Exchange, RadioShack, Pioneer Corporation, Cash America International, GM Financial, Budget Host, BNSF Railway, and Bell Textron. Additionally, the city hosts companies with a significant presence, such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Lockheed Martin, GE Transportation, and AT&T, a telecommunications company based in Dallas. Metro by T-Mobile also maintains a prominent presence in the city.
